Morocco, first country to have recognized the independence of the United States

A friendship was created between Morocco and the United States since 1777 when Morocco was the first country to recognize American independence by opening its ports in the United States one year before Holland and six years before Great Britain and most European states.
A treaty of friendship was signed in 1786 by Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Sultan Mohammed III.
The American legation of “Tangier Institute” in Morocco contains the only historic building of the United States located abroad.
