"Kamikaze" is a Japanese word meaning "divine wind." This term has inspired the creation of a special attack unit responsible for suicide missions performed by military aviators, human torpedoes and divers of the Empire of Japan against Allied shipping in the finals of the Pacific campaign phases the Second World War.
Ceremonial start of a suicide attack, the military vowed allegiance to Hirohito (Emperor of Japan), recited a "tanka" as farewell poem in reference to the duty of sacrifice and drank sake ultimate turning in the direction of their region of birth.
This act reveals the tradition of death instead of defeat, capture and shame, which was deeply rooted in the Japanese military culture. It was one of the primary traditions in the samurai life: loyalty and honor until death.
