At the 19th century, in Great Britain, a suicide attempt was punished by hanging

Christianity a long time regarded the suicide as a sin. Historically in the Christian churches, people who tried to commit suicide were excommunicated.
At the end of the 19th century in Great Britain, a suicide attempt was regarded as an attempted murder and could be punished by hanging.
Today, neither the United States nor Europe regards the suicide attempt as a crime, even if in the United States there could be penalties for those which try this act.
